Introduction
Modern industrial automation systems increasingly rely on real-time, secure, and scalable communication between machines, controllers, monitoring systems, and enterprise applications. OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) has become one of the leading standards for enabling this interoperability across heterogeneous environments and Industry 4.0 infrastructures.
One of the most important architectural decisions when implementing an OPC UA client or server is selecting the appropriate data acquisition strategy. In OPC UA, the two primary mechanisms used to retrieve data are:
-
Polling — where the client periodically requests data from the server
-
Subscription — where the server automatically notifies the client when data changes occur
Although both approaches are widely used, they behave very differently in terms of scalability, network efficiency, latency, implementation complexity, and real-time responsiveness. Selecting the wrong approach can lead to unnecessary network traffic, increased CPU usage, missed events, or systems that are difficult to scale and maintain.
This white paper provides a practical comparison between Polling and Subscription models in OPC UA using the TRAEGER OPC UA SDK and C# examples. The document explains the internal behavior of each communication model, their advantages and disadvantages, and typical industrial use cases. It also provides implementation examples and architectural recommendations for modern smart manufacturing and digital print environments.
The goal of this document is to help developers, architects, and automation engineers understand when to use Polling, when to use Subscription, and how to design efficient hybrid OPC UA communication strategies for production-grade systems.
