An output plugin can provide access to either:

A single output device.

One or more instances of one or more types of device.
The RIP distinguishes between multiple‐ and single‐device plugins by testing them for support of the selector D_FIND_DEVICE_TYPE . If a plugin supports this selector, the RIP assumes it is a multiple‐device plugin.
